I don’t know how many urban wildlife refuges we have in the US but we know some animals adapt well to city living.

Sandhill Cranes and Canadian Geese visit our city every winter and various governmental agencies have cooperated to build an urban wildlife refuge that borders on the bosque.  The bosque (woods along the river) adjacent to the refuge is undergoing some restoration and reseeding.  The preserve is still under construction as is the street  leading to it.

It’s my favorite drive and walking area of late.  A few pictures.

The refuge’s tour bus in the distance.

Cranes looking for insects in an adjacent farm field.

A Heron on the river.
